Finding Your Value in God: 3 Exciting Ways

Finding your value in God sometimes begins in unexpected ways.

“We are letting you go.” She stated so matter of fact.

No, “We’re so sorry”, “Due to downsizing”, or “We are eliminating your position”. Just five simple words that would change the course of my life forever.

Since the arrival of my new manager, the relationship between us could be classified as tenuous at best. Resembling magnets trying to connect at the wrong ends, all my attempts to extend an olive branch, smooth out the coarse edges, develop a bond, or simply foster some sort of civil working relationship seem to make little progress.

On more than one occasion I found myself called to a private meeting with the owner of our company, being questioned about actions I had taken and decisions I had made. Instigated by a personal vendetta and supported with incomplete information, these meetings felt more like a trial than a quest for truth or clarification.

Each time I was able to present clear and complete information as to why the decisions I made were fair, how they benefited the company, and the positive impact they had produced. Each time my job was spared.

Never did I expect that one day one of those meetings would lead to losing my job.

The job I had performed selflessly and sacrificially for over 10 years.

The job where I received several awards for service excellence and tripled the size of our programs.

The job I had once said I would do forever until they kicked me out. I guess that day had come.

I was being given the proverbial boot and unlike the previous meetings, I finally decided I was done fighting for my job. I was no longer interested in trying to convince someone I was valuable to them when they had no interest in seeing it.

They were letting me go and I was going to walk out the door with my head held high, knowing I was leaving that place better than I had found it, whether they chose to admit it in that moment or not.

Finding Your Value in God

As I walked out the door, I was reminded of a story I had once heard.

A father said to his daughter who had just graduated, “Because you graduated with honors, I am gifting you a car I acquired many years ago. Before I give it to you, I want you to take it to the used car lot downtown and tell them you want to sell it and see how much they offer you.”

The daughter went to the used car lot as her father instructed, returned to her father, and said, “They offered me $1,000 because it looks very worn out.” The father then said, ”Now take the car to the pawn shop and tell them the same thing.”

The daughter went to the pawn shop, returned to her father, and said, “The pawn shop offered $100 because it is a very old car.”

Finally, the father asked his daughter to go to a car club, show them the car and tell them the same thing. The daughter took the car to the club, returned, and told her father, ”Some people in the club offered $100,000 for it since it’s a rare car, an iconic car, sought after by many.”

The father told his daughter, ”Always remember the right place values you in the right way. If you are not valued, do not be angry; it simply means you are in the wrong place. Those who know your value will appreciate you. Never stay in a place where they do not see your value.”

Finding your value in God is the best place to stay.

Finding Your Value in God Bible Verses

 As I cleaned out my desk and let the doors of that place close behind me, I found strength and assurance in scriptures that had been a source of comfort to me throughout my life.

Psalm 139:14 echoed in my mind, reminding me that I am fearfully and wonderfully made by the hands of a loving Creator.

I knew that my value was not tied to my job or the opinions of others, but to the truth that I am uniquely crafted with Divine DNA and indisputable significance.

I thought of Matthew 10: 29-31, where Jesus spoke about the Father’s care for even the sparrows. How much more would He care for me, a beloved daughter of the King?!

 “Aren’t two sparrows sold for a penny? Not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father’s permission. Every hair on your head has been counted.  Don’t be afraid! You are worth more than many sparrows.”

I chose to release any bitterness and extend forgiveness to my former manager, knowing that my true worth comes from the One who knows every detail of my life, even the number of hairs on my head.

I realized that while I was completely blindsided and unprepared for that meeting, God was not.

It was not a surprise to Him that I was going to lose my job when I walked into work that day. And He was not worried about what would come next.  He already had that worked out, waiting for me to walk into it.

Your Identity in Christ

As I left, He gave me an overwhelming sense of peace. An inexplicable confidence that everything was going to be OK completely immersed me.

At that moment I remember the sound of that still small voice telling me He was with me, and He would never leave me or forsake me. This defining moment that turned my world upside down was just the disruption God needed to drop into my life to wake me up and shake me out of my comfort zone.

He had been calling me higher for a while, but I had been ignoring and dismissing those gentle nudges.

I had laid down deep roots in the safe and stable place that had me far more stuck than successful.

The dysfunction I had become accustomed to seemed more attractive to me than the discomfort of the unknown He had been calling me into.

Like the little bird that gets pushed out of the nest so he can learn to fly, God had moved beyond the nudge to give me the shove I needed to spread my wings and fly into the future He had waiting for me, that He had prepared for me long ago.

With the assurance of Jeremiah 29: 11, I embraced the uncertainty of my future with hope and excitement.

You see, my sister, God’s plan and purpose for my life, for your life, is to prosper us and not to harm us, to give us hope and a future. So, if we are not currently in a place that is prospering us, if we do not feel hope for our future, we are not yet walking in the fullness of what He created us for.

To anyone who, like me, has faced rejection, betrayal, or uncertain times, I encourage you to embrace your identity in Christ and lean on Him and His faithful promises.

#1 Find your identity and worth in the heart and hands of your Savior, Who is intimately acquainted with every experience we encounter on earth.

Your value is not determined by the opinions of others, the job you hold, the title you bear, or the circumstances you face.

#2 Trust in God’s perfect plan for your life, for He has a purpose and a future in store for you filled with hope and blessings beyond measure.

#3 God has immeasurably more for us than we can ask or imagine. He never wants us to settle for less than His more.

Whatever our vision is for our life – His is far grander. Our job is to get in alignment with His assignment and step boldly into it.

As that chapter of my life closed and I journeyed into the unknown, I held on to 1 Peter 5: 7, casting all my anxieties on him because He cares for me.

I knew that God was with me every step of the way, guiding my path, providing for my needs, and paving the way to my future.

I trusted that even in the midst of upheaval and change, He would be my anchor and my source of strength. As I stood on the threshold of the new opportunities before me, I stepped forward with courage and confidence, knowing that the best was yet to come.

I was not defined by the job I had lost but directed by the boundless love of my heavenly Father. And with His guiding hand, I was ready to embrace the beautiful journey that lay ahead; that is what finding your value in God does.
